A Senior member of staff in teacher education institutions since 1975, becoming Principal of St Andrew's College in Scotland from 1985 to 1999, and Dean of the Faculty of Education at Glasgow University from 1999 till 2001
He has been Professor of Education at Glasgow University since 1993
He masterminded the merger of St Andrew's College to become the Faculty of Education at the University of Glasgow in 1999. This was to bring the national Catholic College into a research-led University while maintaining the distinctiveness of the Catholic dimension of teacher education.
He is a regular contributor to national and international conferences and conventions across the world, on topics as varied as Teacher Education, Leadership in the Professions, Assessment, Management, Personal and Social Education, Catholic Education, Education for Citizenship, Values Education, University Education, etc. He has published widely in various aspects of education.
He has written reports for international organisations on education in India, and has led projects in various countries, including India, Lithuania, Jordan, Palestine, etc.
He has given the keynote addresses to national and international conferences, and has contributed to congresses, conferences and seminars of international standing in many countries. He has run workshops and “master classes” in areas associated with educational leadership in many countries.
He has lectured in every continent (except Antarctica!). He has no ambition to be totally globally inclusive!
