Paint Shop Pro 5
There are numerous graphic packages around, but this is one of the best. It's easy to use and allows some quite sophisticated image manipulation. You can create your own images, manipulate others, or process your own digital pictures. Version 5 also has an 'animation factory' which makes it easy to create animated 'gifs' like the one on the right. It's available from jasc.com and is reasonably priced with discounts for education orders.
Arachnophilia
If you want to design your own webpages and need something a bit more sophisticated than Word 97, then this is an excellent careware program. You do need to know a little bit about how to write HTML, but using it helps you learn. It's available here.
Pressworks 3
Now part of GST's PUBLISHING SUITE 98 this is a good desk-top publisher which I use all the time. Visit their website here or you can download a 30 day trial 'lite' version from ZDNet.
Thumbnailer 6
This is a useful tool for making thumbnails of your images. It creates an HTML page allowing you to click on a small image which takes you to the larger one. Useful if you want to give viewers a choice of picture and don't want to make them wait ages whilst unwanted large images load. It's available from Smaller Animals but it'll cost you $25!
About My Cache
An oddly named program which creates a webpage list of your browser's cache so you can access images and pages offline. Very useful if you've got any idea what I'm talking about - probably not so useful if you haven't! It's freeware available from a FrenchmanFrancois Crevola, but the site is in English.
Photo Objects
The Premium Image Collection has 10,000 superb high definition images of objects which you can incorporate into DTP or web documents. The calculator and pen images on the 'What is ICT' page come from the collection. The package on 2 CDRoms is available from Hemera. It's relatively expensive but there's a trial version containing 5 images and Photofont maker.
Mapmaker
If you want to create image maps for the web (where an image has 'hotspots' which take you to other pages) then this program is as good as any. This 'lite' version is freeware and available from its creator
