The Impact of ICT

Sometimes it takes a while for the impact of new things to filter through to our brains! With ICT the implications for teaching and learning are enormous. Think about the technological changes which have happened in our lives already, and the speed with which old ways of doing things have been replaced. Think about the advent of video recorder, CDs, and now DVD is on the scene. I guess the important thing is not to get left behind. Our students accept these things as if they've always been there.

A personal story
About 18 months ago I ran a similar course to this and put the material, like this, up on the internet. About half a dozen people turned up to the course (and not all of them stayed to the end). It was January, cold and wet, and I was, to put it mildly, a little demoralised!

I went home and checked my e-mail. There waiting for me was a message from someone at the Open University who had come across my webpages and wanted to enlist my help in developing materials for their NOF Learning Schools Programme So the impact can be much greater than you imagine - you never know whom you might bump into on the 'net!

All of this then led to designing the Redbridge RE Network website, so that we in Redbridge would have a forum for exchanging ideas and information.

A colleague recently told me about his three year old nephew's reaction to his grandfather playing an old LP. "Grandad's got this enormous lollipop - and it plays music!"

Don't bury your head in the sand!
