What is the history of Gantshill Methodist Church?

Gantshill Methodist Church was opened in 1928 at a cost of £12,072 – all but £452 of this was provided for by very generous grants. The official opening was on Saturday 30th June 1928 - the celebrations included a public tea in the hall of Woodford Avenue Congregational Church, tickets costing 9d (4p) each! Along with a souvenir brochure everyone received the following invitation:

"A cordial invitation is extended to the inhabitants of the City of London Estate, the Suburban Estate and Barkingside areas - Who are not attached to any church – to attend these services, and identify themselves with its programme of Worship, Fellowship and Service.

Visitors are earnestly requested not to hurry away at the close of the services, but to give the Minister and Church officers an opportunity of becoming acquainted with them"

The history of the church makes for fascinating reading as it has changed and adapted to meet the various needs of the local community. The Church has been fortunate that down through the years, so many talented and committed people have served and given so generously of their time and energies.

Today we have a church membership of around 85 and an average worshipping congregation of 65 adults.
