What is the Methodist Church?
The Methodist Church prides itself on being part of the world-wide Christian family of Churches. The Methodist Church is a 'free church' (not tied to the State) as well as being of Protestant descent. Historically, the Methodist Church developed out of the Church of England in the late 18th Century.
Worship and preaching is of central importance to the Methodist Church as is its commitment to social action and justice and being involved in the life of the world and the community. Methodism is also known for its singing and its highly regarded work with children and young people, both through its work with MAYC (Methodist Association of Youth Clubs) and NCH - Action for Children (formerly known as the National Children's Home).
